Born and raised on Ohlone land in Oakland, California, James Beard Emerging Chef nominee Crystal Wahpepah is an enrolled member of the Kickapoo nation of Oklahoma. Join us for this exciting demonstration on the art and tradition of Native cuisine and the reciprocal practices of mindfully choosing Indigenous food sources. During this demo, chef Wahpepah will explore the deep and powerful role that food has in our lives through her recipes and techniques. The demonstration culminates with a special and delicious Native lunch.

About Crystal Wahpepah: 
Chef Crystal Wahpepah (Kickapoo Nation of Oklahoma) is the owner and executive chef of Wahpepah’s Kitchen in Oakland, California. Chef Wahpepah is a James Beard Award nominee for Emerging Chef in 2022 and opened the first Native, woman-owned restaurant in Northern California. Wahpepah’s Kitchen was the Best New Restaurant of the Bay Area in 2022 and chef Wahpepah cooked at the White House Hunger Conference with the James Beard Foundation as well as for the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences.


Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.

James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.

Events at Platform by JBF are special one-night-only menus and we do not offer a la carte menus. If you have serious food allergies, we will work with the visiting chef team to do our best to accommodate but cannot guarantee that alternate options will be available for every course.
