In her debut cookbook Amrikan, acclaimed food writer Khushbu Shah proves that the Indian American diaspora holds boundless inspiration as the cornerstone of a meal. From Saag Paneer Lasagna to Pani Puri Mojitos and Masala Chai Basque Cheesecake, the recipes in Amrikan are both wonderfully surprising and accessible to home cooks.
To celebrate the launch of the book, Shah will be joined by television host and New York Times bestselling cookbook author, Sohla El-Waylly. Join Shah and El-Waylly for an evening of bites and conversation that goes far beyond butter chicken and introduces a new chapter into the story of Indian food.

Copies of Amrikan: 125 Recipes from the Indian American Diaspora by Khushbu Shah are available for purchase and signing with tickets or at the event from our partners at Kitchen Arts & Letters. 

Copies of Start Here: Instructions for Becoming a Better Cook by Sohla El-Waylly will also be available for purchase and signing at the event.

About Khushbu Shah:
Khushbu Shah is a food writer and journalist who resides in Los Angeles, California. She was most recently the restaurant editor at Food & Wine magazine, where she crisscrossed the United States several times over on the hunt for the country’s best new chefs. She is the youngest person and the first person of color to ever hold that title. You can also find her work in the New York Times, Washington Post, GQ, Eater, and more. Additionally, her writing has been featured in the Best American Food Writing anthologies, and she has made appearances on television shows like Ugly Delicious. Khushbu grew up in Michigan, where her immigrant parents raised her with a deep appreciation for spices and good fruit.  Amrikan is her debut cookbook.

About Sohla El-Waylly:
Sohla El-Waylly published her cookbook, Start Here, through Penguin Random House on October 31, 2023. The book serves as an information-packed guide to the fundamentals of cooking, including over 200 recipes for all types of meals.  
On screen, Sohla will be seen starring in the third season of The History Channel’s series Ancient Recipes with Sohla. She was most recently seen as the judge in the HBO Max cooking competition series, The Big Brunch, created and hosted by Dan Levy, and produced by Boardwalk Pictures, 



Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. Unless otherwise stated, alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.

James Beard Foundation events permit guests age 21 years and older to attend events where alcoholic beverages are served.

All reservations are non-refundable and must be made in advance. Should the event be cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances, including COVID-19, JBF will offer a range of options, including ticket exchanges, the option to donate tickets, or a full refund.
